Challenges We Face

  • For a Better Future

Pennington County students deserve better--and so do our teachers. South Dakota remains #49 in teacher pay and the attacks on our teachers have been relentless. These attacks on education hurt our students, and cause teacher and staff shortages, especially in Pennington County. The Pennington County Democrats are committed to quality education strategies providing our kids the best start in life. We stand with our hard-working professional teachers.

  • Better Care is Possible

Whether it's Medicaid Expansion or getting politicians OUT of doctor-patient relationships, we believe better health care is possible.  After 20 years of super-majority leadership in Pierre, Republicans have left millions of dollars "on the table" by not expanding Medicaid, especially for poor families.  As a patient, we have less rights in our own health care and South Dakota rural clinics and long term care facilities are closing at alarming rates.  Pennington County Democrats want to protect your health care rights and provide more health care to more people.

  • Respect and Dignity

Pennington County Democrats are proud to support and advocate for greater representation and diversity throughout the community. We are all responsible to address inequity and racism and working for justice head-on. We stand with the Oceti Sakowin Oyate (People of the Seven Council Fires) and all indigenous people to work as informed allies with respect and dignity and to amplify Indigenous culture and concerns.

  • South Dakota women deserve autonomy over their own bodies.

Agency over one's own body is a fundamental right.  Dakotans have TWICE rejected measures limiting women's health--in 2006 and 2008. The people of SD have demanded freedom in healthcare and as Democrats, we will continue to fight for reproductive freedoms.
