Meet the Panelist:

Representative Nicole Uhre-Balk

Rep. Uhre-Balk represents District 32 in the South Dakota House of Representatives, where she champions increased state funding for education, protection of the Black Hills, personal health freedom, and expanding representation to build a fair and inclusive community. She brings over a decade of experience as an educator, having taught biology and computer science in schools across South Dakota, Washington, and Massachusetts.

Before serving in the legislature, Nicole worked with students and communities through roles at the Oyate Center, international leadership programs, and environmental initiatives like prairie restoration. She holds degrees in Biology, Environmental Studies, and Curriculum and Instruction, and currently supports educators statewide through her work at Compass (formerly TIE), focusing on curriculum, technology, and cultural learning.

Outside of her professional and legislative work, Nicole serves on the Rapid City Sustainability Committee and the board of Friends of Rapid City Parks. She enjoys outdoor adventures in the Black Hills with her two pugs, Pixel and Qubit, and spends time with her nieces, nephews, and spouse of ten years, Forest Balk.
